As a multi-faceted publication covering many different areas, Velvet Magazine provides a practical and comprehensive guide for the modern woman. Working with the editor-in-chief, I was responsible for maintaining the brands identity and extending its reach beyond the printed product.

A better reading experience

Because the magazine is content-rich, I used a maximalist approach for the pages design and layout - lots of photos, varying colours and heavy text. Editorials that fell over more than one page adopted a more fluid composition and utilised the 'rule of thirds' method to drive the eye to titles, graphical elements and call to actions to make for a better reading experience.

Dynamic working

Built on WordPress, my role with the magazine's website was very dynamic; from simple administrative tasks including web page creation and editing, to the more technical aspects of WordPress management, such as configuring Mailchimp sign up forms for newsletters, surveys and promotional email types, Slider Revolution carousels for featured content and general software troubleshooting.

Immersive digital publishing

One of my core responsibilities was adapting the website to increase user experience and synchronise our marketing efforts across print and digital. After I discovered a massive flaw in the way that the magazine was used online at the time, I implemented a new piece of software that changed the way it was distributed across all of our digital channels.

Using the Issuu Digital Publishing Platform, I was able to embed a mobile optimised version of the magazine into any web page. Not only that, I could convert content in the magazine to AMP Story format; a lightning-fast, search optimised format for delivering information as visually rich, tap-through stories. For our advertisers, this tool was a great way to expand mobile readership and immerse readers in beautiful and engaging experiences.

Print and digital advertising

Group 1 Automotive was one of Velvet Magazine's biggest clients combining both print and digital advertising. The advantages of using both mediums meant increased brand awareness and a broader audience reach.
